How to Find the Perfect Bridal Hair & Makeup Team: A Pro’s Perspective

As a bride-to-be, choosing the perfect hair and makeup team is just as essential as finding your dream dress. The right artists will not only enhance your beauty but also bring positive energy, creating a supportive and uplifting atmosphere on your wedding day. If having top-tier vendors by your side on the most important day of your life matters to you, selecting the right beauty team is absolutely KEY! With over 10 years of experience in the bridal beauty industry, I’m sharing my expert tips to help you find a team that aligns with your vision, personality, and wedding-day needs.

Tip #1 - Start Early and Do Your Research

The best bridal beauty teams usually book 8 months - 1 year in advance and some even further out depending on the location and demand in their area. This is why you'll want to get a head start on the game! Once you’ve secured your wedding date and venue, start searching for hair and makeup artists. This should be around the same time you're looking to book a photographer. Search for professionals who specialize in the type of bridal beauty look you envision yourself wearing on your wedding day. For example, if you prioritize a more natural makeup look then search for artists who specialize in "clean girl glam" or "natural/soft glam" makeup.

Where to look:

  • Instagram & Pinterest: Search hashtags like #(city/town)BridalHairArtist or #(city/town)WeddingMakeupArtist.

  • Wedding Websites: Platforms like The Knot and WeddingWire have vetted reviews and portfolios.

  • Word of Mouth: Ask recently married friends or your wedding planner for recommendations.

Tip #2 - Review Portfolios, Social Media, and Websites

If you're booking a team of artists to accommodate your party, it's important to know exactly who you'll be working with on your wedding day. You can easily reach out and ask to view that specific artist's portfolio to ensure their style matches yours. Every artist has a unique perspective, and their portfolio should reflect their aesthetic, expertise, and personality. As you browse their work, consider:

  • Does their style align with the look you envision (natural glam, soft romantic, bold & dramatic)?

  • Do they have experience working with different skin tones and hair textures?

  • Are there before-and-after transformations showcasing their skills?

Beyond searching Instagram portfolios, have you checked out their website? A well-rounded bridal team will have a strong online presense that extends past their Instagram. This is a great way to learn more about the team's branding message, core values, overall aesthetic, and attention to business detail.

Tip #3 - Read Reviews and Testimonials

While it's true that a great portfolio is essential, a real bride's experiences will tell you more about reliability and professionalism. Reviews are EVERYTHING in this day and age! I don't even try a new restaurant without first diving down the rabbit hole of reviews. You can search views on bridal beauty teams via Facebook, Google, The Knot, and Wedding Wire.

Reviews can reveal:

  • The team's professionalism and communication.

  • How punctual, organized, and cleanly they are.

  • If they create a fun and stress-free experience.

  • Whether the hair and makeup last throughout the wedding day.

If you see consistent positive feedback in these areas, you’re on the right track to finding a trustworthy and talented team for your big day.

Tip #4 - Notice Response Times and Ask Questions

So you've found your dream team and have hit that "INQUIRE" button - how exciting! Now is when the booking process gets fun for both parties. One important factor to pay attention to during this time is their response time. The standard response time for a legitimate team is 24-48 hours Monday-Friday, this will tell you if they're priortizing their inbox (and clients) like they should. You should never feel like you're getting "ghosted" by your team via email - this is a HUGE red flag!

Before signing a contract, it's important to clarify details such as:

  • Accommodations: Does the team offer both hair and makeup services?

  • Pricing & Packages: Are touch-ups or additional services included?

  • Timeline: How many artists will be available, and how long will services take?

  • Travel Fees: Do they travel to your venue, and is there an extra cost?

  • Backup Plan: What happens if the artist has an emergency?

Tip #5 - Schedule a Consultation Phone Call

A bridal trial is crucial—it allows you to test different looks and see how the artist works with your hair and skin type. However, before committing to a trial, scheduling a quick phone call with your potential beauty team can be a great first step. This should always be complimentary! A phone call gives you a feel for their personality, responsiveness, and how well they understand your vision. During the call, you can discuss:

  • Their availability for your wedding date.

  • Your desired hair and makeup style.

  • Pricing and any questions you may have.

If you feel confident after the call, move forward with scheduling a trial. During the trial:

  • Bring inspiration photos that reflect your wedding theme and style.

  • Wear a white or light-colored top to mimic your dress color.

  • Test how the makeup wears throughout the day.

  • Provide feedback—your artist should be open to adjustments!

A trial also gives you a chance to assess how well you connect with your artist. I always say talent and connection is 50/50! Feeling comfortable and confident with your beauty team is just as important as their technical skills.

Trust Your Instincts

Beyond skills and reviews, go with a team that makes you feel at ease. Your wedding morning should be filled with joy, laughter, and relaxation—not stress. Pay attention to how you feel during your interactions with them, whether it's over the phone, at your trial, or during email exchanges. Do they listen to your concerns, respect your vision, and offer professional guidance without being pushy?

A beauty team should not only be talented but also supportive and positive. You’ll be spending a significant portion of your wedding morning with them, so their energy should uplift you and make you feel at ease. If an artist makes you feel confident, valued, and excited for your big day, they’re a perfect fit!
